“We are very happy to reopen the path after 10 years,” Manarola mayor Angelo Betta told CNN.
“It’s a important day for us, also because it’s Valentine’s Day. So what could be more romantic than to come here and climb these steps and enjoy this view?”
The path first opened in the early 1970s, but over the years, it had become increasingly dangerous due to erosion.
In 2010, the local government decided to close it off to the public.
But thanks to a €200,000 ($220,000) restoration project, the path has been completely rebuilt and is now safe for visitors.
“We did a great job,” Betta said. “We worked very hard to reopen it as soon as possible.”
The path is just one of the many reasons why Manarola is a popular destination for tourists.
The city, which is part of the Cinque Terre, or “Five Lands,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its colorful houses, stunning scenery and delicious wine.
“It’s a very special place,” Betta said. “When you come here, you feel like you’re in a different world.”
