Tesla, Inc. is an American electric vehicle and clean energy company based in Palo Alto, California. The company specializes in electric vehicle manufacturing, batteries, and solar panel manufacturing. It also operates a number of production and assembly plants, Gigafactories, and Tesla Grohls. The company was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, and was named after Nikola Tesla.
In 2008, Tesla launched the Roadster, the first fully electric sports car. The Roadster was the first production automobile to use lithium-ion batteries, and had a range of over 200 miles (320 km) per charge. Tesla then followed up with the Model S, a full-sized sedan that was the first mass-produced electric vehicle with a range of over 300 miles (480 km) per charge. The Model S was the best-selling plug-in electric car in the United States for two years in a row, and was the world’s best-selling plug-in car in 2015 and 2016. In September 2015, Tesla launched the Model X, a crossover SUV. The Model X was the world’s best-selling plug-in electric car in 2017.
In July 2017, Tesla announced that it would begin production of the Model 3, a mass-market electric vehicle, in mid-2017. The Model 3 was released in July 2017. Tesla has also developed the Tesla Powerwall, a home battery system that stores energy from either the grid or solar panels to provide power during an outage or when utility rates are high.
In addition to its vehicle manufacturing business, Tesla also sells solar panels and solar roofs through its SolarCity subsidiary. In January 2017, Tesla announced that it would be mass-producing solar roof tiles. The solar roof tiles are made of tempered glass and are designed to look like traditional roofing materials. The solar roof tiles are available in four different styles: Textured Glass Tile, Slate Glass Tile, Tuscan Glass Tile, and Smooth Glass Tile.
In November 2019, Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck, an all-electric pickup truck with a base price of $39,900. The Cybertruck has a range of up to 500 miles and can tow up to 14,000 pounds.
In March 2020, Tesla unveiled the Model Y, an all-electric crossover SUV. The Model Y has a range of up to 300 miles and can seat up to seven passengers.
In May 2020, Tesla announced that it would be opening a factory in Berlin, Germany. The factory is expected to produce the Model 3 and Model Y.
In July 2020, Tesla announced that it would be opening a factory in Shanghai, China. The factory is expected to produce the Model 3 and Model Y.
